Flexible
Membrane Floating Covers: |
| |
Flexible
membrane floating covers have been performing well for over 20 years.
The
low initial cost and easy upkeep of a floating cover makes them
a very practical choice for potable or wastewater liquid storage
and a strong asset in
tandem with a flexible membrane liner under the cover.
| |
| |
Advantages
to an Enclosed System: |
Cleaner
Water the liquid is completely encapsulated by geomembrane,
keeping it consistently cleaner. |
| |
Greater
Chemical Stability the liquid is kept more chemically stable
- for potable water, this means less chlorine use. |
| |
Contain
Odors
keeps wastewater 'odors' out of the surrounding environment. |
| |
| |
Consider
Design: |
| |
There
are several different design "types", however, the most
common design in use is the Defined Sump, Tensioned Plate.
Pioneered by Burke Industries (Burke/Mercer), of San Jose, CA. |
| |
| |
How
it works: |
Place
the cover material in the bottom of the reservoir, tank or cell and
attach it to any structures. |
| |
Place
sand tube weights down the center of the of the containment structure
and out into the corners.
| |
| |
These weights will force all of the 'slack' (when
the cover rises with the water) into sumps, which will also
capture and help drain off rain water later. |
| |
The
weights cause the cover 'plates' to be in tension forcing the
rain water to the sumps as well as allowing you to walk all
over the covered area. |
| |
Covered
foam floats are added parallel to the weights just outboard
of the sump area for safety and other places for common walkways. |
| |
Access
hatches, air vents, and sump pumps are added into the design
criteria as needed. |
| |
Life
expectancy of this cover exceeds 20 years. |
| |

Installation
| |
Construction
of a floating cover is a craft. Experience, ability and pride of workmanship
are all key ingredients along with certified technical ability and
a commitment to Quality Control. |
| |
| |
Maintenance
| |
Although
overall maintenance is low, we advocate routine inspections and
periodic cleaning.
(the
amount of time between cleanings is dependent upon the cover's location.)
