When
Kuiper Reservoir was constructed in 1967, a lining system
consisting of an asphalt base and a membrane liner was installed.
That system was replaced in 1978 with a polyurethane in liquid
form that was sprayed onto the surface of the existing asphalt
to create a seal and liner was put in place over the polyurethane
but
begain failing within three years and it was repaired yearly
until the failure rate exceeded the repair rate.
Engineers
in the Aurora office of Black & Vetch researched many
options for replacing the lining. Cooley Engineered Membranes
was selected to provide the base lining material and Colorado
Lining, as a certified fabricator and installer of Cooley's
materials was selected to begin the process of fabricating
the polypropylene into panels to fit and install in the reservoir.

Because
there are few openings, natural lighting was almost non-existant.
Fifteen
500-Watt halogen lights illuminated the reservoir's interior
during installation of the lining.

Project:
From
its underground depth, Kuiper Reservoir has provided drinking water
to 3/4ths of the population of Aurora, Colorado for 30 years, pumping
60 million gallons per day in and out of the storage facility.
The
15-million-gal reservoir underwent a facelift when the old liner
began to fail at a rate that exceeded cost of repair.
Flexible,
durable Cooley's 45 mil polypropylene,
able to take stress from both directions, was selected as a replacement
liner and was fabricated at the CLI Parker facility.
Challenge:
The underground structure has few openings and non-existant natural
illumination.
A 15-member
CLI crew began the installation of the new lining - pushing, pulling,
and dragging all the tools, lights, supplies and material needed
for the job through its only door - which measures
6 x 7 ft.
