For
environmental protection, the essential landfill component is the
primary or bottom liner.
The
liner effectively creates a barrier to the ground. A bottom liner
may be one or more layers of synthetic flexible membranes (or a
combination of these.)
Many
landfills require a leak detection system to ensure the integrity
of the liner on a continuous basis. The use of geonets directly
below the primary liner or geocomposite nets on an intermediate
soil layer can be effective.

Today's
landfills utilize a range of geosynthetic products to maximize
design effeciency, integrity and performance while minimizing
overall cost.
By
itself the bottom liner contains hazardous leachates and helps
protects groundwater resources.
Landfill
cell liners are currently made of:
|
| |
|
 |
a
single, tough plastic film, (in this case, HDPE). |
| |
|
 |
a
composite liner made of two parts, a plastic or flexible membrane
liner and compacted soil. |
