The bottom of a landfill is sloped, pipes laid along the bottom capture contaminated water and other fluids as they accumulate. The pumped leachate is treated until the leachate has been tested to meet discharge standards.

A properly performing drainage layer is essential to a successful design providing in-plane flow performance to facilitate fluid flow for leachate removal and collection systems or gas vent layers. Sumps are critical as the focal point of the leachate collection system.

Specialized sumps and pipe penetrations require special pipe boots and installation techniques.

Leachate is water that is contaminated by contacting wastes. It seeps to the bottom of a landfill and is collected by a system of pipes.

Leachate is collected from landfill cells and stored in lined ponds for treatment and evaporation.

The liners in these ponds are usually exposed to the elements and are frequently double-lined to allow for a leak detection system.

The lining systems must exhibit the highest degree of durability under climatic extremes of UV, freezing and abrasion.

• Floating cover systems can be designed for leachate pond odor control and rainwater intrusion purposes.
