The
generation of leachate is a direct result of precipitation. Leachate
pumping and treatment represent a significant cost. It is prudent
to seal a completed landfill cell with a geomembrane cover to minimize
this cost.
In
addition to keeping precipitation out, a cover also serves to contain
methane gas, a natural by-product of waste decomposition. Once contained,
the gas can be collected for regeneration or flaring.

Landfill
Caps:
A geosynthetic
cover or cap is an umbrella over the landfill to keep water out
and thus prevent leachate formation. If a cover is not used or maintained,
precipitation will enter the landfill resulting in a buildup of
leachate to the point where it overflows its sides and waste enters
the environment.
Since
the cover is directly exposed to the elements, it needs to be resistant
to sunlight and natural weathering.
